Gene expression Flashcards
Where does translation occur?
Cytoplasm
Describe the structure of an amino acid
Amino group
Carboxyl group
R group
H atom
What type of bond occurs between amino acids?
Peptide bonds (form between amino group and carboxyl group)
What does degenerate mean?
When more the one triplet codes for the same amino acid
How many nucleotides in RNA code for an amino acid?
Three (triplet code)
What is the start codon?
AUG (methionine)
What are the stop codons?
UAA
UAG
UGA
LEARN CHEMICAL STRUCTURES (LOOK AT LECTURE)
DON’T FORGOT TO DO THIS
You need to be able to name and state the chemical type of the standard amino acids
whether they are polar or non-polar? Hydrophobic? Basic? Aromatic?
Be able to draw
Gly, Ser, Phe (or Tyr), Gln, Lys, Glu, Val
What amino acids contain a benzene ring?
Phe and Tyr
What amino acid can form disulphide bridges?
Cys
How many reading frames are there in DNA?
6 (three on each strand) (see lecture of you don’t understand this)
Which is the template and coding strands?
Template top strand 5’ to 3’
coding is bottom 3’ to 5’
What is the start codon in DNA?
ATG (Met)
