Individual’s concept of themselves/their identity; includes social, cultural psychological aspects of identifying as male/female
What are some differences between men and women with experiences of chronic disease?
- Women live longer than men
- Rates of heart disease, stroke, diabetes higher in men
- Rates of asthma, arthritis, mental health conditions higher in women
- Combination of behaviour (men take more risks and neglect own health) and biological factors
Discuss the health issues facing transgendered people.
- Misgendered (ie. what pronoun used, body parts, preferred name)
- Uncomfortable with certain procedures (ie. have pap smears for cervical cancer)
- Misconceptions of surgery; may not due to health reasons
- No name tag identification

Several strategies have been developed by government and community organisations
- To make healthcare more accessible to men
- Change men’s health behaviours

- Men have poorer outcomes, women ignored by research
- Most new drugs tested on men
- Not much knowledge of how common drugs affect women
- Personal safety (ie. from physical/sexual violence) ignored in statistics

- Difficulties accessing appropriate healthcare
- Experience gender shaming
- Fear leads to avoidance of healthcare appointments needed to maintain health
- Ignorance amongst healthcare staff= poorer health
