What are folk linguistics?
A term to describe the attitudes and assumptions which have no evidence behind them yet are accepted by society due to their appearances in everyday life, such as in songs, media and more
What did 1970 researchers start to explore in regards to folk linguistics?
Assumptions about female language, many of which existed to reinforce stereotypes about female speech as deviant from and more subordinate to the male speech
What did Dale Spender analyse (1980)?
He analysed the results of over 140 recorded mix sex conversations and found that in both social and business contexts, women who held the floor
for more than 1/3 of the time were perceived by both sexes to talk too much or to be rude or aggressive, meaning women felt like they talked too much even if they didn’t
What did Zimmerman and West find?
They found out 96% of all interruptions were made by men
What did Louann Brizendine claim in her book ‘female brain’?
She claimed that men and women are different because their brain functions are different
