Aim: show as C grow up= ideas of gender stereotypes becomes more flexible

M: R told C different stories about which toy male and female characters like to play with.
Some stories = person liked gender stereotype and others described as liking non gender stereotype actiities. C asked to predict what other toys each character would like or not like ti play with.

R: young used sex if character to decide
Older considered both sex and what they’ve been told about the character.

Conclusion: older children have more flexible view of gender than younger children.

Criticism: provides support for gender schema theory

A: show that there are individual differences in the way that children think about gender

M: P’s shown 2 photos of 2 different toys to hgs and lgs c and asked which one they prefer. Pictures were either of a mixed gender or one gender.

R: hgs chose quickly in mixed condition then slow in other 2 conditions. Either want both toys or neither. Lgs took in difference in tine- depending on their personal preference.

C: hgs chose toys based on whats gender appropriate. Lgs chose toys in personal preference.
