Gender Schema Theory Flashcards
What is the gender schema theory
This focuses on the role of the child thinking in their acquisition of information about the gender and gender identity
What are the two differences from kohlberg’s theory
It argues that the process of acquiring gender relevant information happened before gender consistency is achieved. Martin argues that the basic Gender identity acquired at gender labelling stage is suspicion for an infant to take an interest in and begin identifying with their gender
I can delay, Martin emphasises the role of how infants schemas affect their gender identity and behaviour
What is scheme and gender schema
Schema is a mental map of understanding. Gender schema please and important part in organising and structure I think the intense thought about information such as what behaviours or emotional responses are appropriate for female/male
What age do children gain their gender identity according to gender schema theory
Two and three years old
What is on in group and an out group
And in Group is where you belong so if you’re a girl that is your own group and your outgroup is the opposite sex
What happens to the child to be when they have worked out that in the group and out group
They have negative Lee evaluated the outgroup and so the ingrate emulate behaviours to void the outgroup. Infants will actively seek out information about that in the group and what they do so they get gender appropriate behaviour
What is research evidence
Martin found that children under the age of four display strong stereotypes about what boys and girls were permitted to do this supports gender shena and contradict kohlbergs claims that gender doesn’t happen until 86. Martin also found that when children were asked to recall pictures of people there remember those of showing the dentist behaviour and that more than non consistent gender behaviour. So therefore gender schemas affect memory recall.
What is evidence that gender schema influences memory 🍕
Furthermore when 49-year-old were told that certain gendered to items were either male or female boys great interest in and were able to remember more details about gender specific items and vice a versa this shows a gender schema supports memory
How does a child up bringing affect their stereotypes for gender
It is found that children’s his mothers works display non-gender stereotype behaviour which indicates that the role of upbringing and behaviour of the parents influence him children’s concept of gender and gender appropriate behaviour
