What is the instrumental role ?
Role played by the man and its another term for breadwinner.
What is the expressive role ?
Role played by the women and means where you meet the emotional needs of the family,look after the children, you are a full time housewife.

What are conjugal roles ?
There are two types of conjugal roles; segregated and joint roles. segregated roles are separate roles in the house are played by the husband and wife. Joint roles are where the husband and wife share household tasks and spend leisure time together.

Young and Wilmott (1973) talked about what type of family ?
Symmetrical Families- smaller, more privatised families where conjugal roles are becoming more common.
William Gershuny spoke about what and supported what ?
Lagged adaptation- where roles are becoming similar but they still need time to become symmetrical. He supported the idea of the ‘‘new man’’- a man who is modern and forward thinking who is in touch with his feminine side- wants to be a hands on dad.

Affectionate Power- manipulation of loved ones
Influence- Males- verbal techniques, females- non verbal
dominance power- socialisation males are taught to be aggressive women are taught to be gentle.

Rots child (no)- Males make major financial decisions, women make lesser decisions. Edgell 1989(no)- important decisions are made by husband but if he chooses they can include the wife. Hardill (no) 1997- husbands career is priority and men are more likely to make big decisions. Pahl 1989 (no and yes)- two types of income control- pooling and responsibility of spending (allowance system). it depends on who has dominant role in the house

1/3 of all violent crimes are abuse against the partner. one case per minute is reported by women.
How many men are victims of domestic abuse and what age range is it most likely to happen in ?
1 in 6 men are victims of domestic abuse . they are most likely to be aged 20-24
What do Feminists blame for domestic abuse ?
Patriarchy. They believe that as the traditional expectations of men are disappearing the are losing their masculinity and as a result are trying to prove who is boss and head of the family.
