Q

Socialisation into gender roles creates gender inequality - Oakley

A

Children are socialised into gender expectations. This is through manipulation (encouraging appropriate behaviour), canalisation (parents directing children’s interest into certain toys and play), verbal appellations (parents using stereotypical descriptions - ‘gentle’ girls and ‘strong’ boys) and different activities (daughters have cultural expectations of future responsibilities - helping with housework). These expectations are damaging, as they limit freedom to the home and caring roles which are lower paid, and can lead to mental health issues

Q

Discrimination prevents women from having equal opportunities
Mc Robbie

A

The positions of women are structurally different through parents giving boys more freedom and time out of the house whereas girls are more protected and expected to be home centred. They would be humiliated if they went out in society/public sphere. ‘Bedroom culture’ girls are socialised in the “safe” domestic environment of the home and adopt the culture of femininity. ‘Culture of femininity’ refers to women being encouraged to spend time, money and effort on their appearance. Girls befriend other girls, to discuss attracting a male ‘suitor’. This is deep-rooted patriarchy, that is implicit
