Gender
The social construction of what men and women should be like in terms of appearance, behaviours, etc.
Gender Inequality
Differences that exist in education, income, etc. based on gender/sexual orientation
Sex
Biological markers of males and females
Masculinity
Social construction of gender - stereotypical male behaviours and attitudes
Femininity
Social construction of gender - stereotypical female behaviours and attitudes
Gender Identity
A sense, usually beginning in infancy, of belonging to a particular gender
Genderqueer
Person who resists gender norms, but does not seek to change sex
Genderfluid
Person who has a gender(s) that changes over time and contexts
Sexual orientation
The direction of an individual’s erotic impulses in terms of the gender they are most attracted
Gender roles
The behaviours, attitudes, and markers ascribed to men/women by society
Performativity
Idea that certain factors, such as gender, are socially constructed then acted out using words and behaviours that have come to be associated with what it means to be male/female
Transgender
Describes the discrepancy between gender that individuals identify with and the biological sex they were identified at birth
Intersectionality
Theoretical approach that examines the interconnection of social categories, especially social disadvantages, related to ethnicity, class, and gender that creates more complex, interdependent systems of oppression and disadvantage
Second Shift
Women’s unpaid housework and caretaking in addition to paid work performed in the formal sector
Hidden Curriculum
The implicit lessons in social roles, values, and expectations that are communicated in schools
