Gender identity disorder - evaluation Flashcards
What do conditioning experiences help to explain? Why?
Why GID is more common in children than in adults
Early life experiences are more dominated by family and family tend to tolerate cross gender behaviour
When child gets older, their peers won’t tolerate it and they may be ridiculed and punished
This leads to confusion
What did Hines (2004) say?
A strong, persistent desire to change sex and undergo formidable obstacles points to a biological explanation
What does evidence point to?
The strong influence of hormones and genetics
Nothing points to a totally biological explanation
What did Bennett (2006) say?
SLT explains the development of cross-gender behaviours but it cant explain the strength of beliefs that individuals have or why some feel the feeling they’re the wrong sex but others don’t.
What ethical considerations need to be taken into account?
It is a sensitive area to complete research
Need to ensure no psychological harm is caused as the individuals are already vulnerable
What is a key bit of evidence to support the biological explanation?
Treatment for GID is hormones and surgeries
