Gender Differences And Sexism Flashcards

Q

S: “I i t o y w m t h?”

“N I r f e.”

A

Sheila: “Is it the one you wanted me to have?”

“Now I really feel engaged.”

Girls are shown to be very passive and submissive. Here Sheila is very materialistic- stating that she needs a ring to feel properly engaged. Men were expected to be the leaders, hence why Sheila seeks reassurance from Gerald.

Q

Mr B: “I t t s i s f y.”

A

Mr Birling: “I’m trying to settle it sensibly for you.”

Mr Birling appears to think that Sheila isn’t capable of talking for herself (or maybe he is nervous that she might muddy their reputation). He doesn’t offer to do the same for Gerald or Eric.

Q

Mr B: “W w s h o y w t, y k, a t k c.”

A

Mr Birling: “Well we’ve several hundreds of young women there, you know, and they keep changing.”

Mr Birling doesn’t care he dismissed Eva because she was just cheap labour. He implies that this is a fairly routine procedure highlighting the vulnerability of working class women in 1912.

Q

G: “S l y a f a c.”

A

Gerald: “She looked young and fresh and charming.”

Implies that Eva is someone he can amuse himself with and then cast aside. This reinforces the power men held over women’s lives. Also interesting to note that these are things that attracted him to Eva rather than personality etc.
