Age Divide Flashcards
Mr B: “L a t p o t - t f y g w k i a. A t c e t a j.”
Mr Birling: “Now look t the pair of them - the famous younger generation who know it all. And they can’t even take a joke.”
Mr Birling is rather stubborn and childish. The younger generation admit to their wrongdoing yet Birling is adamant he is right and continues to talk down to his children.
Mrs B: E, I a a o y.”
Mrs Birling: Eric, I’m absolutely ashamed of you.”
Mrs Birling is quick to shift the blame away to the younger generation as they know less than she does.
Eric: “W I d b y. B d f I a o y a w.”
Eric: “Well I don’t blame you. But don’t forget I’m ashamed of you as well.”
Eric is willing to stand up against his parents in order to fight for what he thinks is right. This comes immediately after Mrs Birling says she is ashamed of him and the juxtaposition highlights the difference in attitudes.
E: “T f r t I d w I d.”
Eric: “The fact remains that I did what I did.”
Eric, unlike his parents, isn’t willing to cover up for his mistakes.
