Sex with the social/cultural characteristics associated with being male/female
What are “gendered social practices”?
They shape womens and mens bodies in ways that reinforce paricular cultural images of ‘femininity/masculinity’

- treatment/gendered partenting
- work roles
Idea of men/women as unequal social categories operates by converting average differences into
absolute differences

..boys are more active than girls from 8-10yrs
- difference increases with age
- the gender difference holds true across social class

What is the morbitity/mortality pattern in females?
higher morbidity but lower mortality hence they are expected to live longer in poor health
more “masculine” gender role orientation is associated with a higher
social value and related health benefits
What does the concept of essence refer to.. the philosophical position that
objects have natural and unchanging properties which make them one kind of thing rather than any other.
