gender bias A03 Flashcards
✅implications of gender bias
what are they?
P-misleading assumptions that come from research about female behaviour &fail to challenge negative stereotypes
E-Tarvis- Quote: ‘it becomes normal for women to feel abnormal’
E-Methodological problem and may have damaging consequences, Eg: females are 2X more likely to suffer with depression
L-External validity of gender bias is increased due to real world implications.
✅Sexism within the research process
P-Lack of women at senior research lvl means female concern may not be reflected in asked Q’s.
E-Male researchers are more likely to have work published and studies which find evidence of gender diff’s are published in journals
E-Lab experiments disadvantage women as they r placed in uneven relationship with male researcher who has power to label them unreasonable
-psych may be guilty of supporting institutional sexism that create bias, thus internal validity of alpha bias is increased
✅Reflexivity
P-modern researchers recognise effect their values have on nature of own work
E-They embrace this rather than view it as problem as its crucial aspect of research process in general.
E-IN study Lack of women in executive positions in accountancy films, Dambrin and Lambert include reflection on their gender-related experiences influence their reading of events
L-important development in psych, leads to greater awareness of the role of personal biases in shaping research in the future and thus internal validity of gender bias is increased
