gender bias Flashcards
what is beta bias?
beta bias exaggerates the similarities between men and women
the differences between men and women are ignored
what are some beta bias studies?
milgram
asch
zimbardo
kohlberg
why is milgrams study beta bias?
milgrams study into obedience to authoritive figures has male participants only but the findings and the conclusion that people will obey unjust comands from authority figures was applied to BOTH men and women
this shows beta bias as findings from a study with male only participants has been generalised to both men and women so the differences between men and women have been ignored and they have been viewed as the same
why is aschs study beta bias?
aschs study into confomity (normative and informational social influence) studied male participants only but generalised his findings of normative and informational social influence to both men and women therefore the differences between men and women were ignored
why is zimbardos study beta bias ?
Zimbardos study into conformity to social roles has male participants only but the findings and conclusion that people will conform to serotyped social roles was generalised to both men and women this shows that men and women have been viewed as the same as the conclusion has been applied to both men and women
why is kohlbergs study beta bias ?
kohlberg proposed stages of moral development based on studys on american boys, research was based on male orientated principles but he said that these were universal and generalised the stages of moral reasoning to both men and women making his study beta bias as differences between men and women have been ignored
who criticised kohlbergs study and what did they say?
gilligan criticised kohlbergs stages of moral development as he didnt study women
she states that womens morality is more influenced by an ethic of care and responsibility to others
womens tendency towards care would place them at a lower level of moral reasoning
what is alpha bias?
Exaggerates the DIFFERENCES between men and women
what are some alpha bias studies?
freud
taylor
biological approach
wilson
why is freud alpha bias?
freud states the oedipus and electra complex. he said that boys will fear castration and girls have penis envy.
these elements of the oedipus and electra complex show differences between men and women therefore it has alpha bias
why is taylor alpha bias?
taylor disagreed with the fight or flight response and said that this is different for women
she argued that women tend and befriend
this is alpha bias as the differences between men and women in the fight or flight response have been shown
why is the biological approach to depression alpha bias?
the biological approach to depression says that women are 50% more likely to develop depression than males. this shows alpha bias as the chance of developing depression is said to be different in men and women
why does wilson have alpha bias?
wilson said that the reason why 95% of bank managers, company directors, judges and uni professors are male rather than female is because men are more dominant and competitive, their dominance is biologically determined by male hormones
this is alpha bias as it suggests a difference between men and women due to differences in their hormones
what is androcentrism?
the view that male thoughts, feelings and behaviour are superior to women and men are the norm.
what studies show androcentrism?
all of the beta bias studies
as they only studied males but generalised findings to both men and women which shows that they view male behaviour as normal and any behaviour that deviates from the norm is seen as abnormal, therefore women may be viewed as inferior
