gender bias Flashcards
gender bias
the failure to adequately consider the differences between men and women.
androcentric
male behaviour is the norm and any behaviour typical of females is viewed as abnormal.
alpha bias
assuming that there is an enduring difference between male and female. Tends to lead to differences being exaggerated and to one gender, typically females, being undervalued.
beta bias
when a theory ignores or minimises the differences between males and females. Assumes that findings from gender apply to everyone.
impacts
create or reinforce existing stereotypes or prejudice, make misleading assumptions, may result in androcentrism - male behaviour being viewed as the norm.
dealing with
use both genders in research, if only 1 gender is used then report findings as applicable to only 1 gender, when studying females study them in a female only environment, to avoid alpha bias reinforce the idea of universality.
