cultural bias Flashcards
cultural bias
The tendency to perceive the world from your own cultural group, ignoring the effect that cultural differences may have on behaviour.
ethnocentricism
Judging other cultures by the standards and values of one’s own culture. The belief in the superiority of one’s own culture which may lead to prejudice and discrimination towards other cultures.
consequence of ethnocentrism
Explanations may only work for certain cultural groups, therefore the findings of studies which are generalised to the whole population must be questioned.
cultural relativism
The idea that norms and values, as well as ethics and moral standards can only be understood and meaningful within specific cultural contexts. This is because each culture in the world differs and norms and values influence our behaviour
imposed etic
When a theory or methodology is developed in one culture and then used to study the behaviour of people in a different culture with different norms, values and experiences
dealing with cultural bias
Not extrapolating findings to other cultures that have not been represented in the research, carrying out cross-cultural research rather than just looking at one culture and gathering evidence from psychologists/ communities in that culture to understand behaviour.
