Gender Bias Flashcards
What is alpha bias?
Freud argued that there are genuine psychological differences between men and women. His theory suggest that women are inferior as young girls suffer from ‘penis envy’. He viewed femininity as failed form of masculinity.
What is Beta Bias?
Refers to theories which ignore or minimise sex differences. This theory often assumes that the findings from males can apply equally to females.
Example of Beta Bias
Biological research found on male animals, which used the flight or fight response. This then meant it was assumed that this would not be a problem as the responses would be the same for both sexes. However Taylor et al (2002) found that female adopt a ‘tend and befriend’ response in stressful situations. They rather form alliances than fight or run away (flight).
What is Androcentrism?
Theories which are centred on, or focused on males.
What is Gynocentrism?
Theories which are centred on, or focused on females.
What is Gynocentrism?
Theories which are centred on, or focused on females.
What is Gender bias?
Psychological research that doesn’t represent the experience and behaviour of men and women.
What is a consequence of Gender bias? (Eval)
Prejudice (alpha) - assuming there are significant gender differences could lead to discrimination (e.g female jobs).
What is a consequence of Gender bias? (Eval)
Wrongly applied findings - if your sample only includes men but you apply it to women, it can lead to wrong and negative stereotypes.
What is one solution of Gender bias? (Eval)
Feminist Psychology - Include representation for each gender in the sample.
