gender bias Flashcards
gender bias
the differential treatment of men and women based on stereotypes rather than gthe real difference
alpha bias
tendency to exaggerate differences between men and women suggesting that there are real and enduring differences between sexes
- consequences typically devalue women
examples - psychodynamic approach
androcentrism
the consequence of beta bias and occurs when all behaviour is compared according to the male standard often to the neglect of women
example - pms
male anger is seen as rational whilst women anger is seen as irrational
beta bias
a tendency to ignore or minimise differences between men and women
example - fight or flight
strengths of gender bias
feminist psychology
- argues that there are real differences but socially determined stereotypes make a far greater contribution to percieved differences
research support
- cornwall found that women are better at learning than men
- challenges the stereotypes that in any gender position men are better
practical application
- beta bias has allowed for greater acces to education for women however haro et al found that arguing for equality draws attention away from women special needs
limitations of gender bias
bias in research methods
- research may find differences between genders but it may not be the genders but instead the method used
- rosenthal found that male experiementers are more pleasant and encoruaging to female ppts and therefore they perform better
instituionalised sexism - lab experiment
- male researchers deem women as unreasonable
- eagly and johnson noted that studies in real settings found women and men are judged as more similar in leadership styles in comparison to in lab settings
