Gender bias Flashcards
What is bias
Persons view is altered due to sterotypes
What is gender bias
Differences between genders aren’t considered due to stereotypes leading to bias
What is androcentrism
Unconscious/conscious focus on males within research/society
What is alpha bias
Exaggeration of differences between genders
Give an example of alpha bias
Bowlby’s monotropic theory of attachment
Sociobiological theory - Men prefer young women as it shows fertility and they prefer impregnating many women/short term relationships. Females prefer older strong males/long term relationships and if they act like men e.g. being with many men, it’s seen as against their nature.
What is beta bias
Ignoring/minimising differences between genders
Give examples of beta bias
Zimbardo’s study on 24 American males assuming that all people experience deindividuation and are prone to their environment
Fight or flight
What is universality
Aim to develop theories applicable to all people(includes real differences) - e.g. self actualisation, congruence - Maslow and Rogers
Evaluate gender bias research and it’s consequences/strengths
Can create misleading assumptions about women e.g. PMS - counter - modern research shows positive female attributes e.g. better at learning
Modern research challenges evolutionary research regarding gender bias(Darwin) - E.g. men can also be selective when choosing partners
Previous gender bias research has led to a criteria being formed to avoid bias(Worrell) - study women irl context - reduces investigator effects, stereotypes etc
Research challenges the idea of gender bias/suggests each gender is unique(Gilligan) - e.g. moral understanding differs between gender
