Cultural bias Flashcards
What is cultural bias
Ignoring cultural differences and interpreting all info through your own culture(can be alpha or beta)
What are emics
Research identifies behaviours/beliefs etc particular to specific cultures(differencesa)
Behaviour is observed within a specific culture to understand its beliefs and logic
What are etics
Constructs universal to all people(similarities)
Behaviour is observed outside of a culture and is considered universal
What is imposed etic
Imposing one cultures values/logic onto another
What is ethnocentrism
Individual uses their own cultures practises to judge/evaluate other people and their cultures
What is cultural relativism
The principle of acknowledging and understanding beliefs and practises of a culture from their perspective to avoid ethnocentrism
Evaluate cultural bias research
Ekman - Not all behaviours are affected by cultural bias(some are universal) - e.g. Ekman - facial expressions - takes into cultural relativism whilst also being universal
Culturally biased research can be used to spread hate (e.g. IQ test on different cultures) - African Americans/white americans - counter - use culture specific tests to reduce imposed etic
Modern research refutes individualism/collectivism e.g. USA and Japan - International conferences are held to exchange info between cultures - reduces ethnocentrism and furthers understanding of cultural relativism
Variables researched in studies may not be experienced the same - e.g. personal space
