wanted to create a woman’s bible using some of the bible’s stories, instead of accepting or rejecting it as a whole. currently it is used to fight against women’s demands for equality. ‘some wily writer’, influence of social standards affecting things discussed in the bible
mary ann tolbert
old testament prophets themselves do not speak about the liberation of women. Ruether replied that because of their limited world view they could not have anyway
dr phyllis trible
rereading of genesis in which eve being created as adam’s helper is not equivalent to her being subordinate to him, where eve takes the initiative while adam is passive, man’s mastery over women is a result of the fall as opposed to what was intended by God,
daphne hampton
you do not try and find a positive reading of Shylock in the merchant of venice- you accept that the anti-semitic remarks where just a product of their time. same should be done for the Bible
schussler fiorenza
wanted to recreate the stories of the women that had been written out of the bible- her-story instead of history
NOT DONE!!!

male language that is used for God is not reflective of masculine qualities for him. idea of fatherhood does not suggest maleness, but a complex idea of him as a father and son, multiple persons in the relationship. fatherhood means universal love and creation. makes the point that even religions with female deities remain patriarchal
1 corinthians
“Christ is the head of every man, and the husband is the head of his wife”
“Women should be silent in the Churches”
Titus
women should be “submissive to their husbands, so that the word of God may not be discredited”
Numbers
‘kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man’
