What is the difference between sex and gender?
Sex = biological differences resulting in male and female
Gender = socially constructed meanings, rules and values, of male and female e.g. clothes, behaviours and social roles
What are the main 2 ways that gender influences health care?
Risk-taking and vulnerability to disease
What are the 3 most common causes of death in men and women?
- Ischemic heart disease
- Cancer
- Cerebrovascular disease
Why are men more likely to die earlier than women?
Men:
- Drink more
- Drive more and faster
- Smoke more
- Work in more dangerous areas
- Take part in more dangerous leisure activities
- Have more accidents generally
- Are more vulnerable to suicide
- Are subject to more murder
- Take less good care of their health
What are the differences between men and women in dental health?
- Women tend to have poorer dental health than men - more fillings and coronal caries
- Women have less periodontal disease and gingivitis than men
What are the differences between men and women in dental behaviour?
- Women attend the dentist more (68% of women compared to 54% of men).
- Women brush their teeth more frequently and also do flossing.
- Women also have less sugar and smoke&drink less.
What are the 4 reasons that women in general have better oral health?
- WOMEN ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR HEALTH
- Women have more problems but seek health more often.
- Women attend more often as they are more likely to gave health anxiety and report pain and symptoms. - Women also tend to take their children and then make their own appointments at the same time
- Women are more concerned about their facial appearance than men.
- Women have more satisfaction with dentists so continue to return to the dentist.
