Gender And Acheivement Flashcards
Why do girls do well in education?
Because they focus more and are more organised getting work done on time.
Oakley discovered that boys and girls are socialised differently, girls are encouraged to be more adaptable.
Why do boys not keep up with girls?
Boys take longer than girls to develop language skills and tend to not be as motivated as girls when it comes to subjects that require a lot of concentration than engaging subjects e.g boys do better in engineering which requires action than English which requires concentration. Sewell argued that boys feel the need to act bov due to the pressure of stereotypes so they reject doing their schoolwork.
What is the effect of social class on gendered achievement?
Girls and boys of higher income families have better recourses and are encouraged in education however in lower income families boys feel pressure from others to not co operate with work so they avoid doing it but girls are encouraged to do well.
Why is there a difference in gendered subject choices?
Boys and girls pick different subjects because of gender stereotypes and influences society tend to push boys to pick subjects like maths and science and for girls arts and languages.
Kelly found that science subjects are seen as masculine which can discourage girls from picking them whereas boys might avoid subjects that are seen as feminine like languages or arts.
How does education impact upon gender and sexual identity.
