El género (The Gender)
A general guideline:
Spanish nouns can often be placed in gender groups according to their endings.
Most nouns ending with “O” are masculine
Most nouns ending with “A” are feminine
But there are exceptions of course.
A tall boy/A tall girl
Un chico alto/Una chica alta
A nice friend
Un amigo simpático/Una amiga simpática
Nouns ending in O, R, S, L and AJE (Masculine vs Feminine)
Are masculine in a lot of cases
The trip (gender)
El viaje (masculine)
Nouns ending in A, DAD, TAD, TUD, UMBRE, CIÓN, and SIÓN (Masculine vs Feminine)
Most are feminine
The city (gender)
La ciudad (feminine)
The difficulty (gender)
La dificultad (feminine)
The attitude (gender)
La actitud (feminine)
The tradition (gender)
La costumbre (feminine)
The inversion (gender)
La inversión (feminine)
Nouns ending in ISTA, ANTE or ENTE (Masculine vs Feminine)
Can be masculine or feminine
The dentist (gender)
El dentista/La dentista (either)
The journalist (gender)
El periodista/La periodista (either)
The student (gender)
El estudiante/La estudiante (either)
The artist (gender)
El artista/La artista (either)
The patient (gender)
El paciente/La paciente (either)
The singer (gender)
El cantante/La cantante (either)
