GENBIO 1 parts of the microscope Flashcards
Eyepiece or Ocular
lens that is planted at the top of the body tube; helps with observing magnified objects
magnification power
certain marking on the rim of the eyepiece such as 5x, 10x, 15x
Eyepiece Tube
holds the eyepiece in place above the objective lens
Nosepiece
circular and the rotating metal part connected to the body tube’s lower end; has three holes wherein the objective lenses are embedded.
Objective Lenses
used to capture light emitted or reflected by the specimen.
4 objective lenses
scanning (4x); low (10x); high (40x); oil immersion (100x)
Course Adjustment Knob
a large knob that is used for moving the body tube down and up for bringing the object to be examined under the exact focus
Fine Adjustment Knob
it is the smaller knob used for sharp, fine, and accurate focusing of the object
Stage
the flat and rectangular plate connected to the arm’s lower end; where the specimen is placed for studying and examining its features; has a hole at the center through which light passes.
Stage Clip
the upper part of the stage is connected to two clips
Aperture
the hole in the stage through which the base light reaches the stage
Iris Diaphragm
controls the amount of light reaching the specimen; located above the condenser and below the stage
Condenser
used to collect and focus the light from the illuminator onto the specimen; located under the stage often in conjunction with an iris diaphragm
Base
a structure supporting the entire weight of the compound microscope
Arm
a strong and curved structure that handles the entire microscope
