gen retractors Flashcards
know functions and stuff
Army-Navy Retractor
- Retracting/viewing
Handheld: Used in pairs for counter retraction in procedures such as an appendectomy and breast biopsy.
- Atraumatic: Used in narrow incisions with ½” to 1½” of depth to retract edges of the wound and provide optimal visibility for the surgeon.
Gelpi Retractor
- Retracting/viewing
- Size: Variable
- Self-retaining: Used on tough tissues such as fascia and periosteum when all hands are busy or two handheld retractors are not enough to provide good exposure.
- Traumatic: Used to hold two edges of dense tissue apart while another pair of retractors holds edges in the perpendicular direction.
Goulet Retractor
- Retracting/viewing
- Handheld: Used in pairs for counter retraction in procedures such as inguinal hernia and breast
biopsies. - Atraumatic: Used in mid-sized incisions to retract skin through fascia tissue by selecting the retracting end based on depth/width of incision.
Senn Retractor
- Retracting/viewing
- Handheld: Used in pairs for counter retraction in procedures such as
carpal tunnel and podiatry cases. - Used in small superficial incisions to pull back the skin edges of the
wound and provide visibility during the procedure.
Traumatic and Atraumatic: one end is small 3 prong that holds fatty tissue ( prevenst slipage. ( sharp or dull) can punctue a blood vessel and gloves. handel with care. other side is a right angle, used to hold small iscisions next to bld ves or nerves.
Abdominal Fisch
Retracting/viewing
Size: Variable
- Atraumatic: Used when closing major abdominal incisions to protect underlying viscera.
- It lays over the abdominal contents, protecting the organs
while the abdominal wall is sutured closed.
Balfour with the Bladder Blade
Retracting/viewing
Size: Retractor comes with variable blades.
Blades come in variable sizes
- Self-retaining: Allows traction from three different directions at the same time
leaving the scrub crew’s hands free for other tasks. - Atraumatic: Used for large abdominal incisions for visualization.
(just in case its just the bladder blade on the test)
The blades on the Balfour can often be exchanged for shallower ones for thinner patients. Pass the Balfour to the surgeon with the blades together and pointing
down into the abdomen. Once that piece is in place, pass the bladder blade which the surgeon will attach to the wing nut devise.
Deaver Retractor
Retracting/viewing
Size: Variable (lengths and widths)
- Handheld: May be used in pairs for counter
retraction or for single sided retraction in most major abdominal procedures. - Atraumatic: Used in major abdominal or vaginal procedures to retract deep tissue
Green Loop Retractor
Retracting/viewing
- Handheld: Used in procedures that would need to retract the thyroid or subcutaneous tissue.
- Atraumatic: Used to retract skin and fatty tissue
in shallow incisions without bruising.
Harrington Retractor
- Retracting/viewing
- Handheld: Used in
procedures that required retraction of
the liver. - Atraumatic: The broad smooth surface of the heart shaped blade gently holds the fragile liver, while the indent at the top of the heart straddles the gallbladder.
Parker Retractor
Retracting/viewing
- Handheld: Used in pairs for counter retraction
in pediatric and neck incision procedures. - Atraumatic: Used to retract the skin and fatty
tissues of small shallow incisions.
Pratt Rectal Speculum
Retracting/viewing
Size: Variable
- Self-retaining: Used in rectal procedures.
- Atraumatic: Lubricated with KY Jelly an inserted into the rectum for visualization deep into the cavity.
Rake Retractors
Retracting/viewing
Size: Variable widths (according to the number of teeth (two to six))
- Handheld: Used in pairs for counter retraction in procedures such as mastectomy or orthopedics.
- Atraumatic and Traumatic (comes in sharp and dull): used to retract the thick layers of tough
skin/fatty/fascia tissue.
Ribbon Retractor
- Retracting/viewing
- Size: Variable lengths (6” to 12”) and widths (1/2” to 3”)
. - Handheld: Used to retract and protect delicate tissue such as the brain and abdominal organs.
Used instead of an abdominal fisch for closing abdominal incisions to protect underlying viscera.
Richardson Retractor
Retracting/viewing
Size: Variable (length and width)
- Handheld: May be used in pairs for counter
retraction or for single sided retraction in most
major abdominal procedures. - Atraumatic: Select the one that matches the
thickness of the patient from the skin to the
peritoneum.
Vein Retractor
Retracting/viewing
- Handheld: Used for single sided retraction of
small delicate structures. - Atraumatic: Used to retract veins or similar
small quantities of tissue.
