Gels Flashcards
What are gels?
Non-fluid colloidal network or polymer network that is expanded throughout its whole volume by a fluid
What are they characterised by?
Their ability to develop rigid molecular network + swell when solvated
Why do gels swell?
Solvent infiltration into molecular network = unfolding + expanding the molecular network
What is a Type I gel?
Chemical gel
Describe a Type I gel
Irreversible polymer network
Covalently cross-linked
Often uses a covalent cross-linker
What is an example of a Type I gel?
Polyacrylamide gel
What is a Type II gel?
Physical gel
Describe a Type II gel
Reversible polymer network
Weak intermolecular bonds
Sol-gel transition in response to specific stimulus
What is an example of a Type II gel?
Agarose gel
What is a pharmaceutical gel?
Drug entrapped in gel matrix
Topical administration
What are the indications of pharmaceutical gel?
Analgesic
Anti-inflammatory
Anti-bacterial
Anti-fungal
Local anaesthetic
What are the basic components of a pharmaceutical gel?
Drug
Solvent
Gelling agent
What may pharmaceutical gel also contain?
Co-solvent
pH regulator
Preservative
Penetration enhancer
What are gels formed from?
Sols
What is a sol-gel transition?
Occurs at the gel point
Gel point = point of incipient polymer network formation
