GEC 103 EXAM QUESTIONS Flashcards
Do you think globalization leads to Cultural Imperialism?
-Cultural erasure of our colonizers because they attempted to fit our predecessors into their standards
-In the current world, we can see that most of the world uses English to some extent for communication.
-The United States along with other powerful countries actively censors or builds narratives beneficial to them.
For example, the united states demonizing the communists and even building the CIA for the intended purpose of shutting it down as the ideas of socialists do not align with that of capitalism.
What strategies can you use to distinguish between fake and factual information on the internet?
Although you’d be inclined to trust the information provided to you by Mainstream news outlets, you’d still have to be wary.
Check multiple sources
Check where they got the information
-Julian Martir who got ostracized and bullied because of allegations against him faking his admissions
How did globalization affect religion?
It has negatively affected religion, - exposure to different ideas allow for a more open mind, leading to some shying away from religion or moving to other religons
However this has also benefited it heavily as it is so much easier to spread the ideologies of these religions. Sometimes, religions with much power and influence can directly affect countries with lobbying or indirectly affect countries like with the Philippines and the inability to pass certain bills
How does religion promote “global peace” as well as “global conflict?”
Religion can be very hypocritical. For example, Christians would argue with these two bible verses in the bible. “Women shall not speak in church” “There is no free man nor slave, no man nor woman, everyone is one in the eyes of the lord”
Which can be applied to the current world. There are many good chrsitian associations seeking to help marginalized communities.
Example. The Drag Nuns that help lgbt youth and the poor.
Nationalist Evangelic Christians lobby against reproductive rights, LGBT rights and are also usually associated with white supremacy groups.
Explain the functions of media
it’s a tool especially for communication, dissemination of ideas and thoughts. Sometimes it is pure such as I would argue one of the purest forms is music. However media as we know it today is highly controversial. On one hand it is used by many activists and people in general to share their own thoughts propagate progressive ideas and on the other hand it’s also manipulated by various governments with different ideologies. Let’s say, America.
America has a very prominent anti socialist, Marxist, communist campaign and iirc the shutdown of communism is what the CIA was built upon and continues to do. With the aid of media it allows America to propagate their views. Alternatively it can also be used to distract people from what the real problems are. For example, rather than focusing on the current state of laborers rights, they’d rather dangle some idiotic anti-trans debacle over people’s heads so they fight over that instead. It’s a very powerful tool.
What are the attributes or indicators of a global city?
-People – connections- Developments – Reputation/Influence
ECONOMIC INTEGRATION Ex. New York Stock Exchange
Economic Power – Ability to use resources. Ex. GDP, Investment, Currency strength
Economic Opportunities – Business and investment
Economic Competitiveness – Produce goods and produce demand, Research, Labor, Trade
POLITICAL INTEGRATION – Ex. Best in imperialism and meddling of inter state affairs is America
Center of Authority – influence global affairs by merely existing Ex. North Korea
Political Influence – Diplomatic power presence on organizations
CULTURAL INTEGRATION
Center of higher Learning and Culture – intellectual influence cultural, academic Ex. New York times being legitimate
Why is Economic power the most crucial determinant of a global city?
Those countries will gain enormous bargaining leverage in trade disputes and diplomatic negotiations because of their 1) military capabilities but also 2) their role in the international economy,
EU pushing back on tariffs from the last president, so too will these other countries have the capabilities to move the status quo to their end of the negotiating table.
Military dominance, I believe, is never secure. Wars are probabilistic, and no matter how high the ex-ante probability of victory appears to be, that probability is still a probability.
Under what circumstances is rapid population growth beneficial to societies?
Putting aside the very necessary rise in birth rate post World War II. In the modern world it can aid countries with poor birth rate, for example, Korea and Japan who are currently having a difficult time addressing the birth rate crisis. Due to the birth rate crisis they are having a difficult time filling in jobs, as well as filling in empty land and houses.
Human life is a very valuable cog in capitalism so of course the governments will try to maintain that.
How can technology and interventions in development offset the pressures of population growth?
One of the most prominent examples of this is Fritz Haber’s production of Ammonia which is the most successful fertilizer. Many of us are alive today because of ammonia. However, during the world war he used his ammonia process to make nitrate to be a chemical weapon. However, ammonia is unarguably such a valuable resource even into 2023.
Why are migrants mostly beneficial for receiving countries?
-Scientists moving to other coutnries give them their very valuable intellectual power. That is why we have a current brain drain in Research & Development. DOST is trying to remedy this with the balik scientist program.
-Alternatively, extra labor power. Many immigrants take up jobs that the locals don’t necessarily want like construction. Let’s take Florida’s current anti-immigration and heavily racist laws put into place. Because of this, many immigrant workers, usually latinos have left their positions and have left the state of Florida with poor labor quality and a lack of skilled people in these very necessary positions.
Unfortunately, employers are able to heavily take advantage of these workers as their expected standard of living is way lesser than what they’d have to pay locals
Is democratizing access to social media beneficial for users?
No, quote tik-tok and control of censorship, anti-china ideas
Especially near the elections
What is sustainable development?
Sustainable development is building infrastructure with a reasonably low hit to the environment. This can be done in multiple ways. Including ethical sourcing, technological advances, even taking care of people can be considered part of sustainable development.
As this is improving the quality of life within fairly reasonable means.
What are the major environmental problems you are exposed to? How are these problems global?
Heat and Ocean acidification focus
Gloibal companies produce the brunt of pollution.
Capitalism is an ideology heavily centered on value. Value of a person. However, with their focus on value and efficiency you’d think that they’d put resources into preserving the environment since they utilize it, however they truly don’t.
They undervalue it and thus they make themselves rich and thus they make everyone else poor. Lower quality of life.
For these issues they have a subsidy and sometimes even tax money goes into these issues.
As a student, how can you reduce the effects of environmental degradation
Individuals shouldn’t be blamed for the greed of corporations.
Read up on the true polluters.
Spread the word
Aid the actions of non profit organizations heavily centered on environmental issues
Pressure the government to R&D on Environment related projects
Explain and provide an example of the concept “Splinternet or cyberbalkanization”, as discussed in class
Splinternet or cyberbalkanization can occur for virtual spaces that share similar thoughts or a similar region. For example, when you live in Russia certain ideals are propagated amongst users of that region distinct from any other country. Alternatively, people with similar views. Like leftists can share the same virtual space. This is heavily utilized by the various governments for their own gain.
Examples of this include the fact that the US government especially the CIA which was established to hunt down communists, still continue to produce an anti-socialist, Marxist, communist narrative amongst the American people. Which particularly works for republican or right-wing associated voters.
