Gear Mechanisms Flashcards
What is a mechanism
A mechanism is a device that transforms an input motion into an output motion they can change the direction of and size or speed and type of motion
Types of motion ?
Linear motion
Rotary motion
Oscillating motion
Reciprocating motion
What’s a gear?
Gears are mechanisms with toothed edges
The teeth of two gears link with each other to transform motion
Usually linear or rotary
What deos RPM stand for and what is it used for
Rotations per minute
What’s the formala for calculating gear rotations
Teeth in driver gear
Teeth on driven gear
What does a Spur gear do
Changes the speed and direction of rotary motion
Rack and pinion gear
Transforms rotary to linear motion
The pinion is the round gear
The rack is the toothed bar
Eg sliding doors
Bevel gear
Changes the angle of rotation by 90 degrees eg hand drill
Worm drive
Mom reversible worm can turn the worm wheel the worm wheel can’t turn the worm
High gear ratio for worm drive
One full rotation of a gear moves the worm a tooth
Idler gear
Only change the direction of motion
Compound gears
Smaller gear and a larger gear rotate on the same axle compound gears are faster and better for power changes
