GEAR DRIVES Flashcards
In Gear Drives Define the pitch circle and pitch diameter and explain
their importance
The pitch circle of a gear is the location on the gear where speed and torque are transmitted. The contact between the gear teeth along a line that passes through the line of centers of the gears.
The pitch diameter is the diameter of the pitch circle and is used to calculate the speed and torque that are transmitted to the driven shaft.
the pitch circle is important because It allows you determine the pitch diameter.
Pitch diameter is important because it can be used to calculate the speed and torque which are transmitted.
List four (4) types of parallel shaft gears and give an application of each
Spur- Used mainly used in low-to medium speed applications ex: machine tool drives and gear reducers
Helical-Teeth are cut into gear and is able to operate at higher speeds
Herringbone-Double Helical gear are used for applications that require quiet high speed loads
Internal-Internal gear drive uses one or more external gear to drive a larger internal gear.
A gear that transfers speed and torque from a driver gear to driven gear is called a ____ gear
Idle
