What is contraception?
Any method that tries to prevent fertilisation
What are the 2 main/general methods of contraception?
1) Artificial Contraception:
Methods that prevent contraception during sex
2) Natural Contraception:
Avoid conception by avoiding sex at certain times
What are the 6 different methods of contraception that exist?
1) Natural Family Planning: e.g. the rhythm method
2) Barrier Methods: e.g. the condom
3) Hormonal Methods: e.g. the pill
4) Sterilisation: e.g. the ‘snip’
5) Intrauterine Device: can prevent implantation
6) Morning After Pill: an emergency contraceptive
What is the Catholic attitude towards contraception?
Artificial contraception is morally wrong because:
- It seperates unitive & creative aspects of sex, which should always be kept together
- Some forms of contraception are early abortions, which are morally wrong
- The Bible doesn’t forbid the use of contraception, so it’s an issue of conscience
What is the Non-Catholic attitude towards contraception?
Contraception is acceptable when used by a married couple:
- Not every act of sex needs to be Unitive & Creative - it can be just unitive
- Contraceptions lead to sexual promiscuity, which leads to other problems (e.g. STIs)
- Artificial contraception can help reduce the spread of STIs, like HIV / Aids
