GCSE Questions Flashcards
Describe how convection currents cause plate movements.
4 marks
In the mantle(1) the magma circulates in huge convection currents(1), these currents are driven by the heat of the core called radio active decay(1). The hot magma rises and causes the plates in the crust to move(1).
Explain two different ways that volcanic eruptions can be predicted.-(4 marks)
The use of aircrafts flying over the volcano (1) because they measure gas given off by the volcano (1). Tilt-meters are used to detect swelling of the volcano (1) because as the volcano fills with magma it can bulge (1).
OR
Boreholes measure water temperature (1) because as magma rises nearer to the surface it heats up the water (1). The volcano has seismometers placed on it (1) because these instruments monitor earthquakes which increase as magma rises (1).
