GCSE Geog-fieldwork Exam Flashcards
Hypothesis fieldwork
- The river is deeper on the outside bend
- the river is faster on the outside bend
- the river load is larger in the outside bend
Location FW
Borowdale gyhll at “Grange”
A tributary of the river Derwent
• South of Dereent Water of Keswick
Why this location
- Safe and accessible river location
- Near Keswick
- Appropriate for investigation
- Meander
Risks
Minimising these by being careful, face up stream, bend knees, be aware of surroundings, Focus on tasks, work in a team
Slippery rocks
fast flowing water
Debris is in the river
Uneven river bed
Methodology FW
RIVER WIDTH
One person stands on the river bank, the second person walks across the river with the end of the measuring tape. Tape measure is kept tidy and above the river. With is the weather out and written down by go to member on the riverbank.
Problems:tape measure got caught in the channel making the river seem wider than it actually is
Methodology FW
River depth
While the tape measure is being held across the river by two group members, a third group member uses a meter ruler to measure the depth across the river channel that every 50 cm. The fact is read out and recorded by the group member on the riverbank.
Problems: pushing the meter ruler down to hard we make the channel team deeper than it is
Methodology FW
River speed
One person holds the flowmeter in the river channel with the propeller facing upstream. It was held in the water for one minute and the district reading read out a person on the bank records it. This is completed at three locations.
Problem: there are people upstream of each group doing the measurement which could affect the speed of the water. It was difficult to hold the flow meter still
Methodology FW
Bedload
At every 100m across the river Channel a rock from the river bed and passed down then you would measured the longest length then write down to the nearest 0.5cm
Problem: bigger rock are likely to be picked which can screw the results
