Give a definition for the following terms.
Market town
Towns which hold a weekly market for the trade of agricultural produce from the local farms
Tourist resort
Settlements which grew as a result of the thriving recreational activities available i.e. Blackpool
Settlement function
The goods, services and amenities available in a settlement
Urbanisation
The growth and expansion of urban development and the movement of people into urban areas
Urban areas
Built-up, densely populated settlements
Counter-urbanisation
The permanent movement of people out of cities to rural areas
Rural areas
Predominantly farming areas with sparsely populated settlements
Depopulation
The reduction in size of the population
Deindustrialization
The reduction in the amount of industry in an area, often as work is outsourced and goes offshore
Newly industrialised countries
Countries which are industrializing and gaining more wealth (or GDP)
Primary industry
Industries where raw materials are extracted, such as fishing, forestry and oil extraction
Secondary industry
Industries where goods are made, such as building and car construction,
Urban sprawl
The spread of the built environment into the surrounding countryside
Greenfield sites
A new development taking place
Redevelopment
Old office and industrial areas being turned into houses or more usually apartments
Green belt
An area of green, rural land surrounding a city, where building developments are strictly controlled
Commuter
Someone who lives and works in different settlements, often driving from rural areas to the city
Derelict
An area with a previous function, which is now abandoned and unused
Brownfield site
A former industrial or commercial site within a city which is being redeveloped and renewed
Gated suburbs
Residential areas with restricted access, often with a security guard at the gate to control who enters the area
