GCSE BIOLOGY B4 Flashcards
Components of blood
Based on a liquid called plasma, carries red and white blood cells, and platelets.
Avg person has 5l of blood in them.
Red blood cells
5mil in each cubic mm of blood. Pick up oxygen from the air in your lungs and carry it to the cells where its needed
Are biconcave discs
Packed with a red pigment called haemoglobin
Have no nucleus
White blood cells
Bigger than red blood cells, but fewer of them, have a nucleus
Form part of the bodies defence system against harmful organisms
Platelets
Are small fragments of cells, have no nucleus, important to help the blood clot at the site of a wound
Blood vessels
Arteries, veins and capillaries
Arteries
Carry blood away from your heart to the organs of your body. High oxygenated blood
Veins
Carry blood away from the organs to the heart, low oxygenated blood
Cappillaries
Form a huge network of tiny vessels linking arteries and veins
Double circulation
a circulatory system in which the blood makes two distinct circuits — compare pulmonary circulation, systemic circulation.
Heart
look at diagram in photos
Leaky valves
Heart valves withstand a lot of pressure and over time they become stiff and dont open fully, making the heart less efficient
Artificial pacemakers
Replaces the original pacemaker if its not going at 70bpm, or when its damaged
Artificial heart
Replaces the heart with heart is damaged, controlled with air pressure
