GCSE BIOLOGY B3 Flashcards
Tissue
Group of cells with a similar structure and function working together
Organs
Are collections of tissues, each organ contains several tissues all working together to perform a specific function
3 types of tissue
Muscular, Glandular and epithelial
Organ systems
Groups of organs thta all work together to perform specific functions
Digestive system
One of the major organ systems in the body,
Process of digestion takes place here
Breaks down large insoluble molecules into smaller soluble molecules which then can be absorbed by your cells
Digestive system
Mainly happens in the stomach and two instestines
Carbohydrates
Provides us with the fuel that makes all the other reactions of life possible
Lipids
Are fats and oils, are the most efficient energy store in the body and are an important source of energy in the diet
Proteins
Used to build up the cells and tissues in your body, as well as the basis of all enzymes in your body.
Around 15% of you body is proteins
Enzyme
a substance produced by a living organism which acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction.
Rate of chemical reactions is controlled by enzymes
Digestive enzymes
Work outside your cells
The enzymes pass out of specialised cells into the digestive system, where they come into contact with the food molecules
Digesting carbohydrates
Enzymes which break carbohydrates are called carbohydrases
Digesting proteins
The breakdown of protein foods into amino acids is catalysed by protease enzymes
Digesting fats
Lipids are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol, then catalysed by lipase enzymes
