What is included in a GCA?
Medical: problem list, cormorbid conditions and disease severity, medication review, nutritional status
Psychological: mental status, cognitive function, mood/depression testing
What is the role of the GCA?
reduces mortality and need for nursing home admission
What are the physiological differences that old people have?
little homeostatic reserve
BP drops early
mask certain disease
often present delerious
What is the reccomended excercise level for old people?
150 minutes of moderate exercise a week
muscle strenghtening excercise 2 times a week
What is sarcopenia?
age related loss of muscle mass and function = increased fat
What is osteopenia?
age related loss of bone mass
exacerbated by immobility
What does increased fat and loss of muscle lead to?
insulin resistance
metabolic syndrome
CVD disease
What does bed rest cause?
decrease in blood volume cardiac deconditioning DVT postural hypotension increased risk of pneumonia and infections UTIs pressure sores constipation loss of strength loss of bone density risk of contractors
