GC and Detectors Flashcards
What is a thermal conductor detector good at looking at?
This is the universal detector, This works of measuring the cooling effect that the gas flow has on a filament. The inert gas tends to have a higher cooling effect then when it is contaminated with eluate.
Good for gas (atmosphere) composition analysis.
What is a flame ionisation detector?
This burns the eluate and a potential is carried across the flame. how well that current is carried relates to the amount of organic molecules in the eluate. This is great for C-C bonds and C-H bonds
What is a electron capture detector?
This uses an electron source to pass from source to detector, as the analytes are passed through the reduction in electrons is measured. This is great for halogen chemicals as they readily take them. it is used tofind pesticides and phenols
what is flame photometric detector?
This analyses the composition of phosphorous and sulfur, it can be limited to an extremely good sulfur detector. This works by burning the analyte and recording the wavelengths
what is a photoionisation detector?
this uses UV radiation to ionise the eluate in a non destructive way, whilst also enabling the user the smell the eluent do to this.
