Gay-Lussac’s Law Flashcards
1
Q
Gay Lussac’s Law
A
The pressure of a fixed quantity of gas is directly proportional to the temperature in Kelvin if the volume of gas is kept constant
2
Q
Equation and formula
A
EQUATION: P1/T1 = k
FORMULA: P1/T1 = P2/T2
3
Q
What happens if the temperature doubles or halves
A
If temp doubles, pressure also doubles
If temp halves, pressure also halves
4
Q
Deviation of gases at low temperatures
A
- at low temp, kinetic energy decreases and thus also the speed
- the molecules move closer together and thus a stronger force of attraction
- the gas liquifies
- the pressure between the gas molecules is less than what gas laws predict
- the volume of a real gas are greater than predicted for an ideal gas
5
Q
STP
A
- standard temp = 273K
- standard pressure = 101,3kPa
