Charles Law Flashcards
Charles’s law
The volume of a fixed quantity of gas is directly proportional to the temperature in Kelvin if the pressure of the gas remains constant
Relationship in words
Volume is directly proportional to the absolute temperature (temperature in Kelvin)
Why does the graph not go through the origin
The graph is in °C and volume is only directly proportional to temperature in Kelvin, not Celsius. There is only a linear relationship between volume and temperature in Celsius. The graph has to be extended to -237°C in order to be directly proportional
The relation between the Kelvin and Celsius scale
t (in °C) = T (in K) - 273
T (in K) = t (in °C) + 273
Equation and formula
Equation: V1/T1 = K
Formula: V1/T1 = V2/T2
