How to examine forestomachs?

A
  • observe ruminating, chewing cud, burp
  • look for pain (shifting weight, hunching,
    extending neck)
  • 50% of cows lying down shud chew cud
    if less, suspect ruminal acidosis
  • auscultate: 1-4 rumen contractns/min
  • Rumen fluid evaluation
  • Wither’s pinch test to test abdominal pain
