Pancreatitis
When the protective mechanism within the pancreas fails that controls the enzyme activation. This causes the activated enzymes to start digesting the pancreas
What does EPI stand for?
Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency
What is EPI?
The pancreas fails to produce sufficient exocrine digestive enzymes
Example of an acid pump blocker
Omeprazole

Example of an H2 blocker
Zantac

Examples of anti emetics
Ondansetron
Cerenia
What drugs affect gut motility
Opiates
Anticholinergics
Irritant Laxatives
Work by stimulating defecation
Not to be used for obstructions or impacted faeces
E.g. Microlax
Osmotic laxatives
Work by drawing water into the bowel to soften stools
Should be used for mega colons, obstructions etc
Care as can dehydrate
E.g. Lactulose
Lubricant laxatives
Lubricate path of faeces, indicated for obstructions. Some can be given orally with care.
E.g. Mineral oil, Catlax
When is inducing vomiting contraindicated
Corrosive toxins, GDV, inability to open mouth, extremely depressed/ weak patients, rats, horses, rabbits, GPs.
