gastroenteritis (Types)
can occur whilst at home
can occur whilst travelling abroad (traveller’s diarrhoea)
traveller’s diarrhoea
at least 3 water stools in 24 hours with or without abdominal cramps / fever / nausea / vomiting / blood in stools
common cause- E.Coli
acute food poisoning
nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea after ingestion of toxin
- staphylococcus aureus
- bacillus cereus (rice)
- clostridium pefringens
e.coli
common amongst travellers
watery stools
abdo cramps and nausea
giardisis
prolonged
non-bloody diarrhoea
bloating, belching, flactulance
tx: metronidazole 40mg tid for 5 days
cholera
profuse watery diarrhoea with severe dehydration, weight loss
*not common in travellers
shigella
bloody diarrhoea
vomiting and abdo pain
staph aureus
severe vomiting and short incubation period (food poisoning)
campylobacter
flu like prodrome crampy abdo pain fever diarrhoea bloody can mimic appendiciits
can cause Gillian barre
bacillus cerus
vomiting in 6 hrs (rice) diarrhoea illness (6 hrs)
amoebiasis
gradual onset f bloody diarrhoea
abdominal pain tender for weeks
incubation period
Incubation period 1-6 hrs: Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus* 12-48 hrs: Salmonella, Escherichia coli 48-72 hrs: Shigella, Campylobacter > 7 days: Giardiasis, Amoebiasis
