Abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health

What is secondary polydipsia?
A
A medical issue that disrupts any step in osmoregulation or alter ADH

What are the causes for secondary polydipsia?
A
Chronic medical conditions:
- Diabetes mellitus & insipidus
- Kidney failure
- Conn’s syndrome
- Addison’s disease
- Sickle cell anaemia
Medications:
- Diuretics
- Laxatives
- Antidepressants
Dehydration:
- Acute illness
- Sweating
- Fevers
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Underhydration

What are the causes of primary polydipsia?
A
Mental illness:
- Schizophrenia
- Mood disorders - dperession & anxiety
- Anorexia
- Drug use
Brain injuries
Organic brain damage

What is the effect of polydipsisa?
A
It leads to hyponatraemia which can lead to bone and kidney damage

What are signs of anorexia?
A
- Low BMI
- Continuous weight loss
- Mood swings
- Dry hair
- Skin & hair thinning

What are the hormones involved in appetite?
A
GLP1 & GLP2:
- Stimulate insulin release
- Inhibit glucagon release
Grehlin:
- Hunger hormone
- NPY activation - initiate appetite
PYY:
- Satiety
- Anorexogenic
