What are the causes for secondary polydipsia?

A

Chronic medical conditions:

  • Diabetes mellitus & insipidus
  • Kidney failure
  • Conn’s syndrome
  • Addison’s disease
  • Sickle cell anaemia

Medications:

  • Diuretics
  • Laxatives
  • Antidepressants

Dehydration:

  • Acute illness
  • Sweating
  • Fevers
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Underhydration
