What are some important preop planning to go over w/ the pt. before their bariatric surgery?
No smoking @ least 2mon prior, stop any aspirin or aspirin containing products (Tylenol) 1mon prior, 48hrs prior to have unsweetened clear liquid diet, NPO day of surgery
What are some important post op care interventions for bariatric surgeries?
Assess HR and rhythm, assess breath sounds and wound, will have a CT scan 1st day to observe for obstruction or leak @ the anastomosis sites
Tachycardia after a bariatric surgery is the #1 indicator of what problem?
Anastomotic leak
What are some other dangerous complications for bariatric surgeries?
Wound infection/dehiscence, pulmonary embolism, DVT and abd hernias or gallstones
What are s/s indicative of a pulmonary embolism?
SOB, diaphoresis, anxiety, cold and clammy skin, severe chest pain, and syncope
What are some other postop care interventions for bariatric surgeries?
Pain meds, coughing/deep breathing exercises, CPAP if sleep apnea, turn q2h/ambulate both w/ assist, bariatric environment, extreme sensitive care
Hair loss, colds, HA, anxiety, depression, delay in wound healing, apathy, fatigue, anemia, edema, irritability, and muscle weakness are s/s of complications r/t to what?
Protein deficiency
