What is gastric antral vascular ectasia, or GAVE?
vascular lesion of gastric antrum, characterised by tortuous dilated blood vessels radiating proximally from pylorus
What is another name for GAVE?
watermelon stomach - due to tortuous blood vessels radiating in watermelon pattern
In which patient group is GAVE most commonly seen?
middle-aged to elderly women
What are 2 associations of GAVE?
- Autoimmune disease
- Portal hypertension
What are 2 types of autoimmune disease that GAVE may exist in association with?
- Sjögren’s syndrome
- Atrophic gastritis
What are 3 histological findings in GAVE?
- Focal capillary thrombosis
- Dilated submucosal venous channels
- Fibromuscular hyperplasia of the muscularis mucosa
How is a diagnosis of GAVE made?
on endoscopic appearance
What are 2 types of presentation of GAVE?
- Acute upper GI bleeding
- Chronic iron-deficiency anaemia
What are 2 aspects of therapy for GAVE?
- Iron therapy and transfusions - may be required
- Endoscopic therapy
What are 3 types of endoscopic therapy which can be used to treat GAVE?
- Laser photocoagulation
- Argon plasma coagulation
- Heater-probe therapy
