Gastric Mucosa

A
  • Has 4 layers.
  • Mucosa is composed of simple columnar epithelium and is folded = rugae.
  • The epithelium extends downwards and forms gastric pits, which narrow to gastric glands.

Gastric Pit - 4 types of exocrine cells.

A
  1. Mucus cells - mucus
  2. Parietal or oxyntic cells - HCl and intrinsic factor.
  3. Chief cells - pepsinogen and gastric lipase.
  4. Enteroendocrine cells - i.e. G-cells produce gastrin.

A

Increases gastric secretions, motility and relax the pylori sphincter.
