What is a gastrectomy?
A surgical procedure involving the full or partial removal of the stomach and the oesphagus is connected to either the small intestine or the remaining part of the stomach. It is often used to treat stomach cancer

Surgical procedure?
Can be done via a large incision from just below the breastbone to the navel or by keyhole surgery.
Affects of being under general anaesthesia?
Paralysis of cilia, they cannot waft so there is a build up of mucus
Immobility leads to lowered FRC leading to airway close = atelectasis
Complications?
Pain diarrhea weight loss nausea Bloating indigestion risk of infection from wound
Physio specific post op treatment?
Mobilise patient ASAP! This helps with blood circulation, helps return bowel and bladder function to normal, lowers risk of lung infection.
Use of incentive spirometer to increase lung volumes
Huffing and coughing will reduce risk of lung infection
