IBS diagnosis
A diagnosis of IBS should be considered if abdominal pain relieved by defecation is accompanied by two or more symptoms from the following: altered stool passage; abdominal bloating; symptoms made worse by eating; passage of mucus.
Constipatino
Start treatment with a bulk-forming laxative such as ispaghula (adequate fluid intake is important)
If stools remain hard, add or switch to an osmotic laxative
If stools are soft but the patient still finds them difficult to pass or complains of inadequate emptying, add a stimulant laxative
Advise that laxatives can be stopped once the stools become soft and easily passed again
