Blind

A
  • solid forgings that are placed between the pipe flanges

- used in conjunction with gaskets to isolate a system

Spectacle blind

A
  • visual indicator that is a handle with a hole in it
  • two gaskets
  • stays in place when system is operational

Q

Volute blind

A
  • Solid in construction
  • seal the pump volute after you remove the pump body
  • isolates the pump housing when the pump is removed

Q

Gasket Joint designs

A
  • flat face (unconfined)
  • raised (unconfined)
  • tongue & groove (confined)
  • male & female flange (semi confined)
  • ring joint (self confined)

Q

Flat Faced unconfined

A
  • most common and on cast iron flanges of pumps and valves
  • also on the split lines of pumps, compressors, internal combustion engine joints
  • allows them to float freely either towards or away from the fluid pressure under load

11
Q

Raised face unconfined

A
  • on piping connections
  • extremely high pressures
  • where pressures range up to 900 psi
  • they are marked with pipe size, pressure class and ring joint groove number
  • pressure class is not psi

Q

Tongue and groove Confined

A
  • no room for gasket to move
  • good for high pressure applications
  • they require closer tolerances

15
Q

Solid Metal rings

A
  • compact seals and are adapted for high pressure, high temperature and corrosive conditions
  • flanges have to be harder than the rings
  • 3 common designs: delta seal, oval seal & octagonal seal
  • to remove these you must pull straight out, opposite of the two flagne faces as they have specially designed grooves
16
Q

Gasket design

A
  • Full face
  • flat wing
  • spiral wound
  • metal jacketed
  • solid metal ring gaskets
17
Q

Pipe construction

A
  • Seamless up to 2” diameter

- spiral over 60” diameter

18
Q

Pipe sizing

A
  • Measured ID
  • schedule #10-160
  • XXH is the strongest, stronger than 160
  • schedule 40 is the most common
