Gaskets & Piping Flashcards
Blind
- solid forgings that are placed between the pipe flanges
- used in conjunction with gaskets to isolate a system
Blank Blind
-installed in the suction and discharge lines of the pump while servicing
Flange blinds
-one gasket
-
Spectacle blind
- visual indicator that is a handle with a hole in it
- two gaskets
- stays in place when system is operational
Volute blind
- Solid in construction
- seal the pump volute after you remove the pump body
- isolates the pump housing when the pump is removed
Sniffer gas detectors
-bellow type pump and detector tubes that contain chemical reactants
Pancake blind
-Visual indicator is shaped like a ping pong paddle
Unconfined
-nothing to hold it in place
Purging mediums
-nitrogen, carbon dioxide, steam, water and air
Gasket Joint designs
- flat face (unconfined)
- raised (unconfined)
- tongue & groove (confined)
- male & female flange (semi confined)
- ring joint (self confined)
Flat Faced unconfined
- most common and on cast iron flanges of pumps and valves
- also on the split lines of pumps, compressors, internal combustion engine joints
- allows them to float freely either towards or away from the fluid pressure under load
Raised face unconfined
- on piping connections
- extremely high pressures
- where pressures range up to 900 psi
- they are marked with pipe size, pressure class and ring joint groove number
- pressure class is not psi
Tongue and groove Confined
- no room for gasket to move
- good for high pressure applications
- they require closer tolerances
Male & Female Semi confined
-confined on its 2 flat sides and on the outside edge
Self confined ring joint
-have machined grooves machined into both flange faces
